
"Sustainable" has been stretched so thin on wine labels it barely means anything any more — it shows up regardless of what a producer actually does on the land. Regenerative wine is different, and the difference is worth understanding before you buy.
Most eco-friendly viticulture focuses on doing less harm: fewer sprays, less water, fewer tractor passes. Regenerative farming sets out to do something more ambitious — actively repair the land, season by season, until the soil is measurably healthier than it was the year before.
Regenerative farming often takes this kind of long-term vision. Take Tomasso, of Malia: he took over a vineyard in a heavily industrialised French winemaking region, where his neighbours irrigate as standard. Tomasso uses none. He's planted trees around the vineyard and between the vines by hand. He's thinking in decades, not vintages — in ten years, he wants his vineyard to be a haven for biodiversity, with vines shaded and protected from the region's increasingly hot, dry summers.

What regenerative wine actually means
Regenerative wine comes from a vineyard system that rebuilds soil health, biodiversity, and ecosystem resilience — rather than merely sustaining them. It's outcome-driven, not rule-driven, and that distinction separates it from both organic and biodynamic farming.
Organic farming asks: did I avoid the banned inputs? Biodynamic farming operates on the principle that the farm functions as a self-sustaining organism in harmony with natural rhythms. Regenerative farming asks a different question: is the soil measurably healthier this year than last?
A vineyard can be fully organic-certified and still till the soil annually — destroying mycorrhizal networks and releasing stored carbon with every pass of the plough. The certification allows it. Regenerative approaches generally avoid or minimise tillage as a core principle, because soil disturbance undermines the biological networks the whole system depends on.
No single certification dominates yet, which is worth knowing when you're weighing producer claims:
- Regenerative Viticulture Alliance (RVA) — the only scheme specific to viticulture. Vineyards must be certified organic (or three years into organic conversion), complete an introductory training, and carry out annual soil self-assessment plus an external certification visit every three years. Verified by Ecocert.
- Regenerative Organic Certified (ROC) — requires organic certification as a baseline, then adds soil health, animal welfare, and social fairness criteria on top.
- A Greener World (AGW) Certified Regenerative — active in the UK, outcome-based. No organic certification required; instead, vineyards document a regenerative plan and are audited annually against measured outcomes for soil, water, air, and biodiversity.
- Regenified — a six-principle soil health framework, practice- and outcome-based, not viticulture-specific but used by some wine producers.
None of these labels dominates the market, so producer transparency matters as much as any logo.
What regenerative farming looks like in a vineyard
Five techniques form the core, and they work as a system, not a checklist:
No-till or minimum-till farming is the foundation. Stop ploughing the inter-row and the mycorrhizal fungal networks beneath the surface survive intact — networks that connect vine roots to nutrients and water across the vineyard. Cover cropping works alongside no-till. Clover, wildflowers, and diverse grasses between the rows fix nitrogen, suppress weeds without herbicides, and feed the soil's microbial life. The cover is mown, not tilled, so root systems stay intact.
Agroforestry goes further: trees around or within the vineyard provide canopy, habitat for beneficial insects and birds of prey, and carbon storage in woody biomass that annual plants can't match.
Animal integration — sheep grazing between rows, most often — adds organic matter directly to the soil and stimulates root decay in the grasses below.
Biodiversity isn't a bonus feature; it's a practical tool. Pollinators support vine health and cover-crop seed set. Predatory insects, bats, and birds of prey reduce pest pressure without chemical intervention.
Each practice reinforces the others: no-till protects the fungal networks cover crops help build; animals accelerate the nutrient cycling those crops fix; biodiversity at every level reduces the pest pressure that would otherwise tempt a spray.
What the science actually shows
The evidence is real, though it's stronger in some areas than others.
On carbon: a seven-year field trial at UC Davis's Oakville research station compared tillage systems using a barley cover crop. The minimum-till system produced a net global warming potential of roughly −873 kg CO₂-equivalent per hectare per year — meaning the vineyard removed more greenhouse gas than it emitted, a negative balance the researchers projected could hold for at least 31 years (Alsina et al., 2018, Soil & Tillage Research). That's one well-documented case, not a universal number — sequestration rates vary significantly by site, soil type, and climate.
On soil biology: research published in OENO One and elsewhere links repeated compost and manure applications to increased soil organic matter and microbial biomass over time — though the specific gains vary widely by trial, site, and application rate.
On biodiversity: studies document real gains in soil microbial diversity and habitat for beneficial fauna in regenerative vineyards, but there's no standardised whole-farm biodiversity index yet — the evidence is currently stronger on function and habitat than on comprehensive species counts.
The honest picture: the outcomes are genuine when measured rigorously, but a single precise multiplier such as "four times the sequestration rate of conventional cropland" isn't something we could verify to a specific source, so it's been left out rather than repeat an unsourced number.
How it shows up in the glass
Healthier, more microbially diverse soils support better nutrient cycling in the vine — which influences aromatic precursors and phenolic development in the grape. Some cover-crop trials have shown increases in anthocyanin and soluble solids in grapes grown with diverse inter-row vegetation.
Direct, controlled evidence linking regenerative farming to finished wine flavour is still limited — most of what we know works through soil biology and grape chemistry rather than blind tasting trials. But the principle holds: grapes grown in living, biodiverse soils with intact fungal networks tend to express their site more clearly, because the vine is drawing on a richer, more complex nutrient environment.
How to buy regenerative wine with real confidence
The certification landscape is fragmented, so a logo alone isn't enough due diligence. What a genuine regenerative producer will actually tell you:
- Specific vineyard practices — no-till, cover crop species mixes, grazing rotations, soil test results.
- Traceability to named plots.
- What's changed in their soils over five or ten years.
Vague language about "working with nature" isn't the same as documented, measurable practice.
